Fighting the Global War on Malicious Code

Quote of the Day

Happy Thanksgiving to the masses, and cheers to Paperghost for the following thought:

I've never understood why Windows comes wide open by default, and then it's up to some idiot boy end-user to try and lock the mess down, then fail miserably and wonder why he's offering his friends cut-price rates on C14LI$.

Too funny, but sadly true...

An Introduction

To begin, I want to welcome anyone and everyone to the incredible world of malware. From old-fashioned viruses, to spyware and adware surreptitiously placed for profit, to the threat of millions of computers controlled by a single hacker's keystrokes, few people get the chance to peer into the world of crime that is malicious code. Few would even guess at its immensity and depth.

I got into the world of malware with the infection of my family's computer with the QHOSTS Trojan. With my very limited knowledge of computer security, it took me an entire afternoon to remove the offending program, and with no small amount of online searching. Later, a similar situation arose with some older versions of DollarRevenue's infamous crapware...that ended with a reformat of the system.

Afterwards, I was hooked. Some two years ago this December, I joined the crew at MalwareRemoval and began my training as a MRU Freshman. More than a year later, I moved to Undergraduate, and can now post to real-life victims with a teacher's scrutiny of my posts.

In the meantime, I got a job with my University's IT department doing malware removal and computer repair. Now I do for a living what I used to do simply for the pleasure of it. I hope that I have more time to do the volunteer work in the future, too.

So, that's my story. Expect to see a side of the malware field that you might not see on other blogs: that of the person seeing it happen in real-time, with real students. Between that, and my obsession with malware- and security-related blogs, there will surely be plenty of things to see here. Subscribe and keep coming back!
